Tracy “The D.O.C.” Curry
Founder & CEO, DOC CARES · Southern Dallas native
Grammy Lifetime Achievement recipient · Death Row Records co-founder
He wrote the records that built a coast. At the height of it, he lost the voice that carried them. He came home to Southern Dallas, to the neighborhoods where the talent is never in question and the door is always unmarked, and he started opening doors for other people's children.
He could have built this anywhere. He built it here.
Prepare them. Protect them. Position them. Then get out of the way and let them live their purpose.
Protection is the part he names first, because it is the part nobody gave him. That is what Dreams Experience Academy is built to be: not a program young people attend, but a place that prepares them, stands between them and the things that end careers early, and then puts them in rooms they could not have walked into alone.
See what he built →DOC CARES is a national nonprofit platform founded by Tracy "The D.O.C." Curry — Dallas native, Grammy Lifetime Achievement recipient, and community architect. Less than three years old. Built to scale. Designed to last.
We do not operate one program. We are building an institution.
"When we are encouraged to dream, the world feels different. When we experience our dreams, the world becomes ours."
"What if the dreams of the underestimated are the essential ingredient for progress?"
"Dreams. Experience. For far too many young people, it's what's missing."
A 501(c)(3) academy for under-championed young people in grades 7–12, delivered free on the campuses their families already trust. Game design is the vehicle. What we build is the entrepreneurial mindset and the skills to build with it, which leads some of our students into careers inside companies and others into companies of their own.
Real-world production, content creation, and industry certifications
Coding, digital tools, and tech career pipeline programs
Entrepreneurship, branding, and financial independence
Built in Dallas. Designed to be nationally replicable. Always free.
A young person who can play ball knows exactly where to be on Tuesday afternoon. There is a field, a season, a coach, and a building where they can see a version of their own future standing in it. Communities know how to develop that kind of talent. They fund it, they staff it, they put it on the calendar.
A young person who can build a game, a song, a brand or a model that learns has none of that. No practice, no season, no coach, no warm introduction, no cousin at Roblox. The door is not closed. It is unmarked.
No field.
No season.
No coach.
Dreams Experience Academy is the practice facility for the other kind of talent. Today that is game design. The verticals we are building toward are the creator economy, music and applied AI.
The communities Dreams Experience Academy serves face converging, measurable challenges. Each one is addressable. Together, they demand a new kind of institution, not a single program but a platform. None of this is a failure of teachers or schools. It is a gap no single institution was built to close alone, which is why DEA works on our partners’ campuses rather than around them.
Big Thought Institute has independently evaluated every cohort we have run, including the term that came in below our targets. This is the whole record.
Average student-rated program impact, 1 to 10. Big Thought Institute cumulative report, September 2026.
Our first two cohorts, 25 students at For Oak Cliff and the Moorland YMCA, independently evaluated by Big Thought Institute.
8.9/10 student referral rating with no detractors · Net Promoter Score +55 · 100% graduation in the older cohort
28 students across St. Philip's School & Community Center and two Texans Can Academies campuses. St. Philip's adopted DEA as core curriculum in its first term with us. Two sites underperformed, and the evaluation told us exactly why.
The difference was never the students. It was session length, cohort stability and whether site support had been scoped and funded.
22 young people across For Oak Cliff and Big Thought's Creative Solutions program, serving youth moving in and out of the juvenile justice system. 807.5 student hours. Our 2025 graduates came back as teaching assistants.
8.6 out of 10 impact rating and a Net Promoter Score of +78, the highest we have recorded · 48.6 average DEA hours per student at Creative Solutions
I can see myself doing this and being successful in it.
That is what Spring 2026 taught us, and it is the most useful thing we know. Few organizations in this field can state a minimum effective dose. We can, because we measured it, and that number is the difference between a program and an operating spec. An operating spec is the thing you can hand to another city.
Average student-rated impact, 1 to 10, by hours of direct instruction. At five hours or fewer, no measurable growth was recorded, so no score is plotted. Big Thought Institute evaluation of the Summer 2025 and Spring 2026 cohorts.
Students walk in with very different levels of interest in a creative career. Cohort 1 started at 63%. Cohort 2 at 86%. Cohort 3 at 80%. By the last day of the term, all three landed in the same place: every student left interested in a creativity-related career.
Share of students reporting interest in a creativity-related career, intake and exit surveys, by cohort. Big Thought Institute evaluation, 2025 to 2026. Intake and exit respondents are not matched individuals.
Interest in game design specifically runs lower and moves around, between 56% and 73% at exit. It does not need to be higher. Game design is the vehicle, not the destination.
What holds across all three cohorts
Communication, collaboration, problem solving and school-relevant skills.
Confidence, willingness to try new things, persistence and self-efficacy.
Careers, industry roles, pathways and future opportunities.
Aggregate positive response rate by outcome domain across all three cohorts. Big Thought Institute cumulative report, September 2026.
Twenty-one competencies, rated by the students themselves, with a prompt to name their own plans for getting better. Most young people answer a question like that with a shrug. These are the answers we got:
Summer 2026 skills self-assessment at For Oak Cliff. Student language reported verbatim by Big Thought Institute.
Evidence footing. Summer 2026 outcome figures derive from For Oak Cliff exit surveys. Creative Solutions contributed attendance, reflections and instructor feedback rather than a comparable exit survey. Big Thought Institute labels all findings descriptive and directional, and interprets outcomes as associated with DEA participation rather than proof of causal impact. DOC CARES operates under a Founder/CEO + Executive Director model, supported by a board representing the intersection of culture, capital, and community.
There is no Fall 2026 term. Three cohorts told us what the next one needs, and this is the season we put those conditions in place: a permanent Executive Director, fully costed, with the search active. A 2027 operating budget built on unit economics we have measured. Site agreements scoped and costed before delivery rather than after, so the conditions arrive with the term.
Our board seated in Q3 and convenes in Q4 to approve the plan and supporting long term fundraising strategy. The next term starts with the conditions already in place.
One student, one full term. Everything prices from this number.
Targeted expansion across North and Central Texas, with strategic markets beyond it under evaluation.
